Protea Banks Shark Diving – enjoy this great shark diving tour: Protea Banks is part of an extensive reef system some 8km offshore on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. Protea Banks is recognised worldwide as one of the top shark diving destinations and this dive package should make any shark diving enthusiast extremely happy!
Protea Banks Shark Dive Package: Your shark diving package includes 10 dives on Protea Banks – 7 x drift dives over the reef and 3 x baited dives ! The exact dive sites depend on the season and recent shark activity. Protea banks is famous for it’s Zambezi (bull) sharks and a baited dive on Protea Banks often provides divers with the chance to witness complex interactions between different shark species including tiger sharks, bull sharks, dusky sharks and blacktips.
All dives include tanks and weights. Additional dive equipment can be hired from the dive centre at a daily rate. Divers meet for the first launch at 07h00 for 08h00 launch on weekdays. Dive sites and launch times will be confirmed at the dive centre the day before. Divers need to present an Advanced dive certification card and logbook showing a minimum of 20 dives to dive Protea Banks. Further dive training and Nitrox courses available on request.
Launches are through the surf on RIB’s (rigid inflatable boats) or “Ducks”. While the launch from Shelly Beach is more sheltered than other sites in South Africa it can be quite challenging on big surf days, so divers must be prepared for some excitement even before the dive !

Your home away from home for this package is located on the KwaZulu Natal south coast with it’s many beautiful beaches and nature reserves such as the spectacular Oriby Gorge, surrounded by lush sub-tropical forest, teaming with birds and wildlife.
These nature reserves are a trove of endemic trees and plants, with several marked trails to explore along the cliffs, the river and through the forests.

Oceans Africa works with several selected accommodation providers on the South Coast that facilitate divers for Protea Banks. Chosen for location, comfort and suitability for divers, our advertised package price is based on comfortable mid-range accommodation, with single and sharing rooms available. Depending on availability, we may suggest a comparable alternative, while upgraded accommodation can also be arranged for clients wanting a higher level of comfort.
Wherever possible, we keep accommodation close to the dive operation to minimise unnecessary travel on diving days.
Meals are generally not included, giving you the flexibility to eat locally according to your own budget and preferences. Some accommodation includes breakfast, while self-catering options can also be arranged on request.
Private transfers to and from King Shaka International Airport, as well as transport between Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, are included in the transferred package. A self-drive option is also available, and car hire can be arranged for travellers who would like more freedom to explore the area outside of diving.
