Protea Banks & Aliwal Shoal Dive Package
Two of South Africa’s great offshore dive destinations in one package.
Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks are close enough geographically to combine easily, but different enough to justify spending time at both.
This 5-night South Africa dive package starts at Aliwal Shoal before continuing approximately 100 km south to Protea Banks, combining two of KwaZulu-Natal’s best-known offshore reef systems in one trip. Designed for experienced divers, the package includes locally based accommodation, diving with our preferred operators at both destinations, and private transport between each area.
Airport and inter-destination transfers are included, with a self-drive option available for independent travellers. Solo divers are welcome, with single-room pricing available and optional extra nights and dive days for those wanting a longer trip.

A Two-Centre South Africa Dive Tour From Durban
Aliwal Shoal offers a varied introduction to South African offshore diving, with reefs, wrecks and a wide range of dive options. From there, the trip continues south to Protea Banks, where greater depth, stronger current and blue-water conditions bring a different scale and intensity to the diving.
Protea Banks asks more of the diver, but that challenge is part of its character. The current drives the ecology of the Banks, carrying nutrients, fish and large pelagic animals through the system, while deeper profiles, fast drifts and blue-water ascents add to the sense of adventure.
Having worked Protea Banks for many years as both skipper and dive guide, we know how important local knowledge is here. Our clients stay locally and dive with teams who work the Banks day after day, reading the conditions, currents and activity as they change.
The KwaZulu Natal South Coast
More than just a dive destination
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has plenty to explore once the diving is done. Beaches, coastal forest, and local restaurants make it easy to fill an afternoon, while a free day allows time to enjoy the nearby nature reserves such as Oriby Gorge, with hiking trails, adventure centre, wildlife and dramatic scenery.
This also makes the package easier to combine with a non-diving partner, or to extend with an extra day or two without simply adding more dives.
Accommodation and Transfers

Oceans Africa works with selected accommodation providers at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, chosen for location, comfort and suitability for divers. Our advertised package price is based on comfortable mid-range accommodation, with single and sharing rooms available. Depending on availability, we may suggest a comparable alternative, while upgraded accommodation can also be arranged for clients wanting a higher level of comfort.
Wherever possible, we keep accommodation close to the dive operation to minimise unnecessary travel on diving days.
Meals are generally not included, giving you the flexibility to eat locally according to your own budget and preferences. Some accommodation includes breakfast, while self-catering options can also be arranged on request.
Diving is arranged through fully equipped local dive centres, with rental equipment, Nitrox and other diving requirements available where needed.
Private transfers to and from King Shaka International Airport, as well as transport between Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks, are included in the transferred package. A self-drive option is also available, and car hire can be arranged for travellers who would like more freedom to explore the area outside of diving.
