The Quirimbas Archipelago describes a chain of 32 islands stretching north from Pemba on mainland Mozambique for some 80 nautical miles to the border with Tanzania. The Islands are known for their pristine reef systems and exclusive lodges, offering the adventurous traveler some of the best wild diving and fishing in Africa.
Live aboard Mozambique: We offer an unparalleled opportunity to experience “wildest Africa” in comfort and style aboard the luxury 66ft catamaran “Michelle Rose” while exploring extensive mangrove systems and coral reef and discovering the archipelagos fascinating history of Arab trade and early Portuguese settlement. The remote mainland supports populations of elephant, lion, wild dog, leopard and hopping off for a quick safari in one of a number of National parks in Tanzania and Mozambique can easily be arranged.
Lazarus Bank Charters: The Quirimbas also provide access to the renowned Lazarus banks. Lazarus Banks is a large sea-mount rising from thousands of meters to just below the surface. The banks lie approximately 60 Nm from Ibo Island and are a magnet for large pelagic species. Dog-tooth tuna, giant kingfish, sailfish, marlin, sharks and rays can be found cruising the ledges and drop-offs. Lazarus Banks is one of those mythical dive destinations few divers get to experience. A live aboard charter is the only way to explore this magnificent site in comfort and safety and the crew of the Michelle Rose are the ones to get you there.
Whale Watching in the Quirimbas: Humpback whales arrive in large numbers from July to November. Seeking the warmer waters off Mozambique, the whales come into the area to calve and mate. Cruising around Pemba and the Quirimbas at this time you are almost guaranteed to encounter whales as well as the local populations of dolphins, spinner, bottlenose and the more elusive humpbacked dolphins.
