The Humpback Whale Supergroup Experience offers a chance to witness one of the most dynamic feeding behaviours seen along the Cape coast. Seasonal aggregations of 20 to more than 100 humpback whales have been recorded off Hout Bay, Cape Point and Yzerfontein. These events depend on changing ocean conditions, but when they occur they provide a rare opportunity to observe large-scale feeding in the productive waters of the West Coast. Oceans Africa offers private charters, seasonal guidance and curated whale-watching itineraries built around current activity.

Humpback Whale Expedition
Whale Expedtion Tour Description
This whale watching expedition is built around extended time on the water during periods when feeding humpback whales are active along the West Coast and Cape Peninsula. To maximise time offshore, guests meet at the launch site at 6:30 am, with transfers departing from Cape Town around 5:30 am. The day remains flexible, guided by recent sightings and current conditions rather than a fixed route.
On arrival, guests are welcomed by the crew with a light breakfast before departure. A detailed briefing covers safety onboard, expected conditions, and how the trip is managed around whale behaviour and the wider marine environment.
Once at sea, the focus is on observation and interpretation. Guests are encouraged to scan for surface activity such as blows or feeding birds, while the crew tracks activity and adjusts the route as needed. Light snacks and drinks are provided onboard.
This experience suits wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and returning whale watchers looking for a deeper, more immersive whale watching experience.
