From November through March, humpback whales gather along the Cape coast to feed, at times forming aggregations of more than 100 animals. These spectacular feeding events have been recorded off Hout Bay, Cape Point and along the Cape West Coast.
This full-day Humpback Whale Expedition is designed specifically to search for this activity, with up to six hours on the ocean and the flexibility to follow current sightings and conditions.
The expedition operates from the Cape West Coast and is run with our preferred permitted whale-watching partner in Yzerfontein. Oceans Africa can arrange this as a stand-alone day trip from Cape Town or include it in a longer whale-watching itinerary combining Hout Bay and False Bay.

Whale Expedtion Tour Description
This whale watching expedition is built around extended time on the water during periods when feeding humpback whales are active along the West Coast and Cape Peninsula. To maximise time offshore, guests meet at the launch site at 6:30 am, with transfers departing from Cape Town around 5:30 am. The day remains flexible, guided by recent sightings and current conditions rather than a fixed route.
On arrival, guests are welcomed by the crew with a light breakfast before departure. A detailed briefing covers safety onboard, expected conditions, and how the trip is managed around whale behaviour and the wider marine environment.
Once at sea, the focus is on observation and interpretation. Guests are encouraged to scan for surface activity such as blows or feeding birds, while the crew tracks activity and adjusts the route as needed. Light snacks and drinks are provided onboard.
