WINE AND WHALE DISCOVERY TOUR WESTERN CAPE
Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay whale and dolphin watching tour.
3 x Nights from ZAR 7 600 per person
This four day whale and dolphin watching tour may be linked to any tours, packages and charters offered by Oceans Africa in the Cape Town and the Garden Route regions. Elements from this tour can of course be used to create your own custom tour. Tour may also be run in reverse e.g. from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town. The tour combines land-based whale watching in the Hermanus area with boat-based whale and dolphin charters in Plettenberg Bay.
DAY 1: CAPE TOWN - HERMANUS DAY TOUR
From Cape Town we follow the old coast road through an area of rugged mountains and sweeping bays to reach the popular seaside town of Hermanus by the early afternoon. Set upon low coastal cliffs Hermanus is an ideal place for the seasonal, land based observation of southern right whales. From the cliff-top elevation the whales often lie just beneath you in the shallows, allowing the unique opportunity to take your time and observe them at close quarters without disturbance of any kind. Whilst in Hermanus we will also visit the local vineyards and will of course have ample opportunity to sample the local product.
DAY 2: HERMANUS - PLETTENBERG BAY, GARDEN ROUTE
From Hermanus we travel inland through the wheatfields of the Southern Cape to the historic and beautifully situated town of Swellendam - South Africa's third oldest after Cape Town - and its interesting museum complex.
Our next port-of-call is Mossel Bay, the first landfall on Africa's east coast by the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. The local maritime museum is built around a replica of the Caravel used on that epic voyage. Also of interest is the Old Post Office Tree, a 800-year-old milkwood, under which letters were left for passing ships. Leaving Mossel Bay we journey through the Wilderness Lakes District and the town of Knysna to reach Plettenberg Bay in the late afternoon for sundowners overlooking the bay.
DAY 3: PLETTENBERG BAY DAY TOUR
Day three is set aside for exploring Plettenberg Bay and surrounds. We start the morning with a close encounter whale and dolphin watching charter - searching the bay for different species (like humpback and the Bryde's whales) and learning more about their behaviour and biology. The vessel is officially licienced to conduct close encounters and may legally approach whales to within 50 meters - an up close and personal encounter never to be forgotten. The afternoon is left open for a wide choice of activities (not included as prices vary) from scuba diving and bungi jumping to simply relaxing. Overnight in Plettenberg Bay
