SARDINE RUN COFFEE BAY 2019
All bookings for future sardine run tours are on hold until further notice from the Department of Environmental Affairs. The department is currently looking at ways to regulate the sardine run tour industry. We will keep you updated on developments as soon as they arise.
SARDINE RUN COFFEE BAY TOUR: This is a 6 night sardine run package based in Coffee Bay on the Wildcoast. The package includes 5 days on the water in search of sardine run activity.
Arrival Durban or East London: Oceans Africa can arrange all you transfer requirements (not included) The transfer takes approx. 4 hours from East London It is best for your flight to arrives in before midday so as not to drive on the roads in the dark.
At the Ocean View Hotel you will settle in and prepare your gear for the next days sardine run adventure.
Sardine Run Action: After a hearty breakfast at you are transferred by 4 x 4 to Mapusi for the launch. The beautiful Mapusi river mouth is sheltered from prevailing wind and swell an provides one of the best launch sites on the Wildcoast. The microlight is usually in the air by the time the boat launches. The goal is to find shoals of sardines and and observe the feeding activity of predators. The microlight will guide the boat to the best activity while the crew assess the action and decide on the best approach for entering the water. Usually this will be done on snorkel initially. If a stable sardine action is found then divers may choose to enter on scuba.
Sardine run action action is often fast and furious requiring you to climb in and out of the boat many times. The boat carries enough food and refreshment to sustain you through the day.
You return to base no later than 15h00. clients may choose to relax by the pool . Clients meet at the bar for an early evening drink where the hotel often serves us crayfish and oysters for bar snacks. An all you can eat buffet dinner is prepared by the hotel and is available from 18h00
Due to the logistics of remote operation the can be no refund for any no-fly or no-launch days. Sea days lost to bad weather will not be refunded. Alternative land- based activities will be offered to clients and lost time at sea will be added to later trips where possible.

Afternoon Activities at Coffee Bay: Coffee Bay is in the heart of rural South Africa. Tourism plays and vital role bringing jobs and income into the community and the Sardine Run is a very important part of the local tourism industry. Activities offered by the Hotel are available to all clients that would like to do something in the afternoon instead of just relaxing by the pool. There will be a small service charge levied by the Lodge and all bookings need to be done in advance.
Sangoma and village tour: Walk through the local village and meet the wonderful people and learn more about their traditional way of life. You can then visit the local Sangoma (medicine man) and receive his blessing for a good sardine run.
Walks and hikes and drives:The walks are all graded from professional hiking to the casual and there are experienced guides who will show you the way safely.
