Southern right whales seen from the boat

Boat-based whale watching

Boat based whale and dolphin watching charters are available daily in most areas. These 2-3  hour boat based whale watching charters are available from Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Hermanus, Gansbaai and Durban. After the safety briefing and launch (you should remain dry!) you explore the local area by boat in search of whale and dolphin activity.

Your goal is to experience an non intrusive close encounter with some of the worlds largest marine mammals. The vessels are officially licensed to conduct close encounters and may legally approach whales to within 50 meters. It is then up to the whales if they wish to investigate you and the boat more closely. Often their natural curiosity gets the better of them providing an up close and personal encounter never to be forgotten. Open to all ages. Waterproofs and life jackets and refreshment provided.

Outside of whale season there is still much to see on any marine tour. Dolphins become the primary focus as South Africa boasts very healthy populations in almost all coastal regions and spectacular sightings and encounters may be had throughout the year – see dolphin watching charters.

All whale and dolphin watching charters can be included in any tours and packages offered by Oceans Africa. Why not create your own custom tour package, just send us an e-mail and we’ll happily work on a quote for you!
